Confined Water Training – what is it?

All Diving Agencies, have rules on training, called Standards.

One of the key parts of diver training, or indeed a diver experience involves some “Confined Water” training.

For Instance the below are the Standards needed

Discover Scuba Diving          1 Confined Water              1 Open Water

Scuba Diver                         3 Confined Water              2 Open Water

Open Water                         5 Confined Water              4 Open Water

In The PADI Instructor Manual, Confined water is defined as “Swimming pool-like conditions with respect to clarity, calmness, and depth”.

Unfortunately it is very rare that the sea in Limassol can be considered to be Swimming Pool-Like Conditions!! At a depth where you can kneel down to learn skills and just stand up if you have a problem, the sand here is very fine and will limit visibility. Plus most days the sea is not as calm as a swimming pool, unless its at 6am!!! But who wants to get up at that time of the day!

Confined Water Training

Therefore unlike some other Dive Centres, Dive In ONLY teaches Confined Water in the swimming pool, for comfort and safety, as well as to adhere to this PADI Standard.

So, when looking for a Dive Centre, do ask where your confined Water will be conducted, obviously, by going straight into the sea, its more stressful, cuts corners, breaks diving Standards, if its not swimming pool-like conditions, and is probably why the diving is cheaper!!!

Diver Training – Its so Important!

A recent news article reported on a diving incident that should never happen if standards and procedures were followed correctly when diving and if the diver had remembered the training.
We have noticed over the last few years how many people we have had book diving with us as an Open Water diver and in fact they haven’t been taught, or remembered, even the basic relevant skills and safety checks necessary for the level of qualification they had paid for!

Students, without having any prior knowledge about diving put their trust in the Instructor and Dive Centre to do their job as per the training standards of the Diving Agency they represent.

A newbie to diving will not be able to tell the difference between an lnstructor teaching them strictly via the Standards or an Instructor and Dive Center who is cutting out key skills or skipping over them quickly in order to save money (hence the reason for cheaper courses!)
We have experienced Open Water divers unable to:
Assemble their equipment
Do a proper buddy check
Check air quality & their air consumption
Complete a weight check

Dive In always sticks strictly to PADI’S Standards when teaching and guiding dives. We teach all of our customers to a competent level. Indeed, in 24 years we have taught nearly 12,000 PADI Courses and have a safety record to be envious of, in addition as one of the top Dive Centres in Cyprus we have taught over 1,500 people Instructor level credentials.

So if you are looking to learn to dive, ensure that the Dive Centre and Instructors explain the Course in detail to you, including the skills they will teach you and when you are asked to sign the record card, ensure you check that all the skills were taught to you and that you have mastered them! We at Dive In use all PADI produced teaching materials including the planning dive slate for your final Open Water dive, a final opportunity for you to check you are happy and comfortable with all the skills we have taught you.
Diving is safe and fun when taught and experienced correctly.

For more information on Courses, check out our website and contact us to explain everything to you.

Sidemount – Steamline Your Diving With Dive In Limassol This Year

Our PADI Master Instructor Alex Miodrag is back with Dive In for the Summer of 2017, and this year he has added to the Specialties he can teach, Sidemount and Full Face Mask.

Dive In’s  feature diving for 2017 is Sidemount and Alex will be available to teach you how to get the very best from Sidemount diving. He will teach you all about the many benefits of diving with Sidemount, homing in on your existing diving skills, and perfecting them whilst having fun.

Sidemount

Your will learn how to;

  • Properly assemble and set up your Sidemount scuba diving equipment, correctly, safely and comfortably. By carrying your tanks on your sides instead of your back it will reduce drag making your dives more comfortable.
  • Trim your weight system and Sidemount gear so you’re perfectly balanced in the water.
  • Manage gas by switching second stages as planned, if wearing two cylinders.
  • Respond correctly to potential problems when Sidemount diving. For example if you plan to use Sidemount for a boat dive he will best advise you in making sure you will be able to quickly secure and release tanks on a moving platform or in choppy conditions.

No excuses! Sidemount is suitable for recreational scuba diving, so contact us today to find out how you can book, and gain your specialty in Sidemount Diving and get the best out of your dives!

Get credit! The first dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course may credit as an Adventure Dive towards your Advanced Open Water Diver certification – ask your instructor about earning credit.

Why not combine the Sidemount Course with an Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN) Course to get the most benefits of this way of diving, extending your bottom time.

Edible Six Pack Rings Could Save Marine Animals

What a fantastic idea!!

Saltwater Brewery a small craft beer brand in Florida whose primary target are surfers fishermen and people who love the sea, has come up with an idea that could save the lives of marine animals around the world: biodegradable and edible six-pack rings.
We have got used to seeing tragic pictures of birds, otters, turtles, and fish stuck in plastic six-pack rings that slowly kill them after getting wrapped around their necks when humans chuck them in the ocean or lose them on the beach.

Saltwater Brewery’s product makes it easy for animals to simply chew them off and even eat them. Even better, the rings are created from a by-product of the beer-making process meaning that they are not only completely safe for fish to eat, but they are completely sustainable and biodegradable, too.

If nothing eats them, they simply dissolve!

As with many environmentally friendly products, the edible six-pack rings are more expensive to produce. Saltwater Brewery is working to add the rings to all of their canned products, and ideally they will share the technology with other breweries and drink makers, so the future will be littered with less plastic.

Artificial Reefs In Cyprus – Marine Protected Areas

Over the past few years Cyprus has been sinking ships in order to create artificial reefs. The need for this initiative has been the dwindling fish stocks around the island.

The project is being financed to a great extent by the EU fisheries programme which has been running from 2007. Funding for the first reef was supported by the programme. Contributions to the project have been made by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and the Cyprus Dive Centre Association.

We first blogged this in July 2015 Artificial Reef Blog

In August last year The Fisheries Department produced a film about the Artificial Reefs, and asked Jonathan to do the English voice over!!

The film is now available and is a fascinating documentary.

Rescue Training with Limassol Professional Life Guards Association

Dive In Limassol on 3rd September 2016, were asked to take part in the public rescue displays in Limassol with the Limassol Professional Life Guard Association. This Diver Rescue was just one of the many scenarios, they showed, others included a jet ski accident, an inflatable boat overturned and swimmers in distress.

We had great fun with the Life Guards, and the Marine Police who kindly gave us special permission to fire off the distress flares.

This event was covered by the local news channels and watched by several Limassol MPS and well as a large audience on the beach.

PADI Celebrates 50 Years
